    This course is designed to give you a strong foundation in the historical and contemporary use of Western herbs, effective preparation and formulation of herbal medicine to be used in clinical practice, and the knowledge and skill to put herbal medicine into practice for your family or community. The course reflects our holistic approach to health and healing that incorporates food, lifestyle and spirit.

    This course provides approximately 100 hours of study. These hours are a combination of recorded video content, required reading, and required research projects. Upon completion of all activities you will receive a certification in Foundations in Western Herbalism. This course is a pre-requisite for Advanced Clinical Concepts in Herbalism.

    You will learn:

    • Introduction to Western Herbalism
    • Bioregional plant characteristics and environments
    • Basic botany and plant identification
    • Growing, harvesting, and storing medicinal herbs
    • Phytochemistry of medicinal plants
    • Food as medicine
    • Introduction to body systems and herbal remedies for common concerns

    Kris Vaughan is the owner of Herbal Wisdom Institute and the founder of Foundations in Western Herbalism. She provides lecture content in this course along with other instructors. Kris is a clinical herbalist, medicine maker, educator, and businesswoman with extensive experience in marketing and operations.

    Rachel Alm is the Lead Instructor for Foundations in Western Herbalism. She facilitates this course providing content from each of our instructors and guest speakers. Rachel is a Medical Herbalist, a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, she has  a Masters degree in education, and she is an experienced medicine maker and businesswoman.
